A distinguished life across two worlds

Dr Wafik Moustafa is one of the UK's most prominent British-Arab personalities and Middle East experts — a distinguished practising medical doctor, politician, author, historian and social activist.

Born in Cairo on 16 July 1948, he studied medicine at Cairo University (MB BCh, 1974) and at the Universities of Edinburgh and Glasgow (LRCP LRCS, 1981). He arrived in London in 1974, aged 26, and made Britain his home. He practised as a GP in Nottinghamshire from 1982, became an honorary lecturer at Sheffield Medical School, and continues to serve NHS patients in West London.

He is recognised across the world as an advocate for freedom, democracy, social justice, secularism and human rights in the Arab world, standing for the peaceful reformation of Islam as a prerequisite to secular democracy and for the integration of Turkey, Israel and Iran into a new Middle East.

A bridge between East and West, Dr Moustafa has promoted dialogue between the Arab world and the UK for decades — leading and facilitating parliamentary delegations to Egypt, Tunisia, Israel, the West Bank and the Golan Heights, and holding a strong connection to, and appreciation from, the "Arab Street".
